Two things were instrumental in causing many farms to fail during the onset of the Great Depression are

    Higher farm prices Extended drought

    Explanation:

The Great Depression were the worst years where massive lands of North American plains suffered because of the severe drought that went on for years, causing soil erosion, abandonment of farm, dust storms and extreme hardships for people settled there. The other reason was high farm rates. This along with the increased rates of debts, acted as a huge setback. The mechanisation that occurred happened all on credit. Apart from this, the farms had higher tenancy for smaller lands.
