Forced migration denotes migration caused by discrimination for political, religious or ethnic reasons; compelling economic reasons (such as fleeing to earn the bread of life); or environmental changes such as natural disasters or other serious environmental changes that make it impossible to live where people come from.

People who for such reasons are forced to flee are often called political refugees, economic refugees and environmental refugees respectively. Political refugees come under the responsibility of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and are thus prioritized and distributed to countries that have committed themselves to accepting refugees.

A clear example of forced migration in American history happened with the Indian Removal Act in 1830, where Native Americans were forcedly relocated to reserves, displacing them from their territories.
