Spaniards were the first to discover the region in search of gold and silver. In 1528, the first major expedition and a complete mapping were carried out with the leadership of Álvar Núñes Cabeza de Vaca, feats that lasted eight years. After that, the Spanish began to send more and more expeditions, until some permanent Spanish settlements were implemented in 1682.

Shortly thereafter, Frenchman René-Robert Cavelier was in the same region looking for riches and even establishing his own French settlement within the state. This group of French people ended up being decimated by natives and storms, but their presence alarmed the Spaniards to further their stay there. Then, in 1718, the fort of San Antonio de Bexar, later known as The Alamo, was built as a protection for the village of San Antonio de Valero. In 1772, this village became the capital of the then Spanish colony of Texas.
