Alternative explanations

When you eliminate any other possible explanation for the relationship of the cause and effect. So there is no some confounding third variable that may be responsible for the observed relationship.

Covariation of cause and effect

when the cause is present, effect happens afterwards. When cause is not present, effect does not happen.
