It was an act of protest against the Tea Act of 1773 imposed by the British. It was supposed to the East India Company that was failing at the time by decreasing the tax on tea. It would enable the company to monopolize the American tea trade and weaken the price of tea. This caused the patriots to sneak into

Boston Harbor and dump the tea supplies into the water. This along with excessive taxation and no representation of the colonist would lead to the Revolutionary War.
