The Whig Party supported the supremacy of Congress over the Executive Branch. It also favored modernization programs which included the development of the industry through technological developments, the development of banking, and economic protectionism.

The Federalist Party also supported the development of private banking, the manufacturing industry, and favored the federal over the state government.

Both parties resulted very attractive to people who had conservative views such as businessmen and bankers. However, their proposals were in some way disregarding of the working class and farmers.
