    I believe the answer is: would want everyone to perform in this manner

    Ethical is a standard of good behaviour that expected to do by a certain people. In research, non-ethical behaviours do not necessarily resulted in bad conclusion for the research. But it would potentially endangered or angered the subjects in certain way that might ended up in legal dispute.
