    The French emperor ordered an invasion in January 1802, and his troops defeated Toussaint's forces. A major obstacle to French colonial ambitions in the Westerm Hemisphere; the Haitians however, stubborn resistance, and a peace treaty was drawn, Toussaint himself was treacherously seized and sent to France.
