How do you think the culture and values shared by greeks both united and divided them?

What united them were the ancient Olympic games, for example, where men and women of Greek society would gather and perform different athletic feats. All Greeks had a developed taste for culture and art and this was something that separated them from many other cultures at the time. What divided them, however, wwas a sense of pride and independence which also was a minor reason for wars.
