During 1700s courtship in America was all about choosing the right partner by having stability in life through wealth. On the other hand, in the late 1700s this developed to learning and understanding the responsibility of keeping a marriage. So daughters are trained by their mothers to learn the things they should know to have a good relationship. Practical reason came out that love has to be there before entering a married life.

In 1800s men and women became more passionate when it comes to love and physical attraction in love. While in the 19th and 20th-century courtship developed to having more social activities for men and women to get to know each other. Dating was a way to learn if they like each other or not.

In these modern times, a more serious outlook comes to "getting steady" after the dating stage. This means that the relationship is moving to a more higher stage as a preparation for marriage.
