The Articles of Confederation, adopted in 1777, were a first constitution of the United States. They provided some limited legitimacy to the Continental Congress in such cases as conducting diplomacy with other countries and regulating teritorial issues.

However, they were replaced by the United States Constitution, as the Constitution provided a stronger goverment with a strong central power (the president). According to the Articles of Confederation, the association of the states was more loose and de-centralised.

The Article of confederation had to be replaced because they were weak. The Congress had less power to do whatever they wanted. Only the States had power.
