The American interests were best served by the Gadsden Purchase, because the Americans purchased the Gila River and west of the Rio Grande. This was a big purchase for the United States from Mexico and a transcontinental railway along a deep southern route. This expanded trade opportunities and business opportunities from the Pacific to the South and eased some tensions which had been present since the land swap.
