I believe the answer is: Boston townspeople attacked British soldiers, who shot five colonists.

The confrontation was initially caused because of the tension between the soliders and the people because the soldiers are posted to forcefully enforce the regulations made by the british government.

The patriots that exist at that time used this event to gained a lot of support from the people to encourage rebellion against the British authorities.
