Which factor distinguishes a metallic bond from an ionic?

    The main factor is malleability. Because ionic bonds are so much stronger, they are brittle and will break easily. Metallic bonds are weaker, with a "sea" of electrons allowing atoms to move about freely, hence they are very malleable.
