    They were trying to achieve religious tolerance

    The Toleration Act mandated religious tolerance against all Christians. The act was meant to ensure freedom of religion for Christian settlers of diverse persuasions in the colony. Passed in 1649 by the local representative government of Maryland. Lord Baltimore aimed to purchase toleration for his worshippers
