After the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts, many of those jailed for sedition were editors of newspapers who opposed the Federalist Party and were aligned with the Democratic-Republicans.

This is because the Alien and Sedition Acts were a blatant effort by the Federalists to silence their critics after the XYZ affair.
